Some people live their lives proving that limits are nothing more than challenges waiting to be overcome. Trey Joseph Brandt is one of those people. Born on June 21, 1996, with the most severe form of Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), doctors gave his family little hope. They told his parents he would never talk, walk, or develop a personality—that he would be nothing but a burden. They even handed his family a list of homes where he could be placed, advising them that raising him would be too difficult.
But Trey had other plans.
Defying the Odds from the Start
Instead of giving in to the bleak prognosis, Trey’s family took him home, determined to give him the best life possible. With relentless dedication, they worked with him through various therapies, and by the time he was four years old, he was talking in full sentences, reaching the milestones of a typical child his age. When his parents took him back to the doctors to show them just how much he had accomplished, they were met with a simple response: He’s an exception to the rule. That phrase has defined Trey’s journey ever since—an exception, an outlier, a force of nature who has spent every moment of his life proving the world wrong.
Academic and Athletic Excellence
From kindergarten to high school, Trey was mainstreamed into regular classes, requiring little assistance. He not only kept up—he thrived. He made the honor roll every six weeks, earned Academic All-State honors, and was known for his incredible work ethic. He played soccer, swam competitively, and when high school came around, he wanted to be involved in football just like his brothers. When playing wasn’t an option, he became a varsity sports medicine trainer. To earn that role, Trey had to learn CPR and collect recommendation letters. He ended up with more letters than anyone in the history of his high school, including one from the Houston Astros coach. For four years, he worked tirelessly as a trainer, winning a state ring alongside his team. From early morning practices to late-night games, he dedicated himself completely, proving that passion and commitment outweigh any limitation.
A Talented Musician and Performer
Trey didn’t just shine in sports—he found his voice in music as well. In junior high, he fell in love with singing and playing instruments. He taught himself to play the guitar, keyboard, and drums, eventually writing and composing his own songs. One of his most special creations, Love You to the Moon and Back, was written for his mother, a testament to his love and deep emotional connection to those around him. His music can now be found on every major social media platform, and he continues to inspire audiences with his performances. Trey has performed at the Houston Rodeo, at weddings, and at private events. He has even become a TikTok influencer, sharing his talent and joy with thousands.
A Heart for Advocacy and Charity
Beyond music and sports, Trey is passionate about giving back. He has worked at McDonald’s, BB’s Restaurant, and Howdy’s Homemade Ice Cream, as well as serving as a marketing salesman for his dad’s company. He participates in numerous charity events, including the Celebrity Classic Softball Series, which benefits veterans and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. After losing his beloved brother, Taylor, to an accidental drug overdose, Trey became an outspoken advocate for drug abuse awareness, dedicating himself to helping others avoid similar tragedies. Trey has been featured on CNN, New York News, The Debra Duncan Show, and Houston Life TV. His close friendship with NFL star JJ Watt has also brought national attention to his story, including his participation in Watt’s Celebrity Softball Tournament.
Living Life to the Fullest
Trey’s adventures don’t stop there. He is a world traveler, having been to more places in 28 years than most people see in a lifetime. Cruises are his favorite, and he and his family are always looking for their next big adventure. The only thing missing from his life? Finding that special someone. With his enormous heart and unwavering kindness, he’s hopeful that one day, God will bring him a girlfriend who will cherish him just as much as he cherishes those around him.
